TIE FOR LEAD AFTER PLAY SUSPENDED AT THE 37th TEXASSTATE OPEN
TYLER, Texas – Matt Loving has company atop the leaderboard, after Australian Adam Crawford shot a new course record 9-under-par 61 on Friday. The co-leaders are 10-under-par and three shots ahead after second round play resumed this morning at 7:30.
Crawford is originally from Brisbane, Australia and plays on the Australian PGA Tour. This is his first Texas State Open, and he is excited about the way he is playing. “I’m happy to be playing well,” he said. “I had an exemption into this tournament, so it’s nice to play well.”
Loving played a consistent round of golf Friday, shooting a 2-under-par 68 to reach 10-under-par for the tournament. Loving says after starting slowly, he was able to pick up his game and birdie three of his last four holes. “I was in a weird little funk,” he said. “But after the rain delay I knew I needed some birdies, and I was able to get them.”
The darkness Friday night forced play to be suspended, and approximately 26 players resumed their rounds this morning. Play was suspended Friday afternoon for more than two hours as storms rolled through the area and caused the late finish.
J.J. Killeen of Fort Worth, Christopher James of Edmond, OK, and Brad Lardon out of Bryan, TX finished tied for third at 134, four strokes behind the leaders. Killeen and James both shot a 6-under-par 64 Friday, and Lardon finished the second round with a 4-under-par 64. Seven players finished tied for sixth with a two day total of 135.
Even with inclement weather, the field did have a hole-in-one in the second round. Shaun Goodwin of Conroe, TX struck an 8-iron 206 yards on the down hill ninth hole for his third career ace. The shot came at the right time as Goodwin was able to turn around a bad start and finish the round with a 1-under-par 69. “Nothing was going right for me, then I birdied the 8th hole and had that hole in one; then I had a chance to make the cut,” he said.
The 72-hole stroke play event consists of 156 contestants comprised of 28 amateurs and 128 professionals. The final field will consist include 50 professionals and 5 amateurs. All four rounds will be contested at The Cascades a 6,834 yard, par 70 layout located in Tyler, Texas. The total purse is $125,000, with $25,000 awarded to the champion.
