LOVING LEADS BY THREE AFTER ROUND ONE OF THE 37th TEXAS STATE OPEN

TYLER, Texas – Matt Loving of San Antonio, TX set a new course record and is the clubhouse leader after the opening round of the 37th Texas State Open at The Cascades. Loving got out to an early start, shooting 6-under-par on his first nine holes. He finished the round with an 8-under-par 62, one stroke better than the previous course record.

Loving played college golf at Texas Tech, where he was named an All-Conference player twice and an All-Academic player three times. He played his senior year at Texas A&M and has played professionally since 2001. Loving said he did not even know he was shooting a course best while he was playing. His wife Brandy caddied for him for the first time Thursday.

Past champion Casey Devoll had a great afternoon, shooting a 33-32-65 (5-under-par) and ending the day in second place. Devoll won the Open in 2004. Two players finished tied for third with a 4-under-par 66.

Five players are tied for fifth place with a 67, including Raul Lemus, an amateur from Mission, TX. Lemus currently plays at North Texas, where he says he has struggled a little with his game. “I haven’t been playing too hot,” he said. “But it feels good to be back, especially at this stage.”

The 72-hole stroke play event consists of 156 contestants comprised of 28 amateurs and 128 professionals. The field will play 36 holes before being cut to the low 55 scores and ties. All four rounds will be contested at The Cascades, a 6,834 yard, par 70 layout located in Tyler, TX. The total estimated purse is $125,000, with $25,000 awarded to the champion.

The 2007 Texas State Open at The Cascades is sponsored by Ashworth, KETK NBC 56, Park Cities Bank, Residence Inn Marriott, and UST Shafts.

Round two will commence at 7:30 a.m. on Friday. Admission is $10.00 for adults, $5.00 for those 18 and under, and free to Northern Texas PGA Junior Golf Foundation members.
