PILLER LEADS AFTER THIRD ROUND AT THE 38th TEXAS STATE OPEN
TYLER, Texas – Martin Piller of Dallas, Texas leads the field after round three of the 38th Texas State Open at The Cascades. Piller gained momentum from yesterday’s round and carried it well into today, making five birdies and chipping in for eagle on the par-5 number 14th hole for a three round total 10-under 200. “I had a perfect start, which is critical. I’m excited about tomorrow. I’m done with college golf and want to play professional, and this is exactly where I want to be,” said Pillar. As the low amateur for both the 2006 and 2007 Texas State Open, Piller recently turned professional and will enter the final round with hopes of collecting his first prize check of $25,000.00.
Tied for second at 9-under are Shawn Stefani of Baytown, Texas, Shaun Melville of Lubbock, Texas, and amateur Dustin Garza of Mission, Texas. A past member of the Lamar University golf team, Stefani shot a 5-under 65 for the day and currently plays on the Hooters Tour. “I got off to a good start, made pars and birdies. For tomorrow, I will just try to have a lot of fun and see where the day takes me,” said Stefani. Melville, a Texas Tech University graduate, currently competes on the Adams Golf Tour. With rounds of 68-67-66, he has played consistent golf all week and indicated he will head into the final round “not worrying about the lead and just playing golf.” Garza shot a 3-under 67 for the day and completed round three as the low amateur. At tomorrow’s final round, he will attempt to become the second amateur to win the Championship.
In fifth place at 8-under stands Scott Abbott of Dallas, Texas. Tied for sixth place at 7-under are Beaumont’s Dawie Van Der Walt, Waco’s Adam Meyer, Mansfield’s Martin Flores, and amateur Christopher Ward of McKinney, Texas.
