ACUNA AND PILLER LEAD THE FIELD HEADING INTO ROUND THREE
TYLER, Texas – Houston’s Pablo Acuna and Dallas’ Martin Piller will lead the field heading into round three of the 38th Texas State Open at The Cascades at 7-under-par 133. Making six birdies for the day, Acuna ended at 2-under par 68. “I hit well today and my putting game was good. I recently turned professional so I’m really looking forward to the weekend,” said Acuna. Piller, recently turned professional following a college golf career at Texas A&M. He had the low round for the day with five birdies and a hole-in-one. He aced the 165-yard par 3 fifth hole using an 8 iron. Piller will head into the final two rounds vying for the Championship title after capturing the Texas State Open low amateur title the past two years.
Tied for third are Dallas’ Scott Abbot and amateurs Dustin Garza of Mission, Texas, and Arlington’s Bobby Massa at 6-under-par 134. Abbott qualified for the Texas State Open at Hollytree Country Club and currently plays on the Tight Lies and Gateway Tours. Garza, a golfer for Wichita State University, earned his exemption into this year’s tournament from the 2007 Texas State Open where he was the second low amateur. Massa, a junior at UT Arlington, also plays on the golf team and has trained for twelve years under Kenny Huff, PGA head golf professional at The Cascades. “It was an up and down round today, but if I hit the driver better tomorrow, I should be in good shape,” he said.
The 72-hole stroke play event consists of 156 players. Following round two, the field will be cut to 62 players comprised of 53 professionals and 9 amateurs. All four rounds will be contested at The Cascades a 6,918 yard, par 70 layout located in Tyler, Texas. The total purse is $128,000.00, with $25,000 awarded to the champion.
