THREE WAY TIE FOR FIRST PLACE AFTER ROUND ONE OF THE 38th TEXAS STATE OPEN
TYLER, Texas – The opening round of the 38th Texas State Open at The Cascades closed with a three-way tie for first place at 5-under par 65. Pablo Acuna of Houston, Texas, Ryan Posey of Dallas, Texas and Christopher Ward of McKinney, Texas will lead the field entering round two tomorrow.
Acuna, a native of Guatemala, was recruited to play golf at the University of Houston in 2003. “I had a rough start but was patient and trusted my game,” said Acuna. He rebounded with four birdies on the back nine to finish tied for first.
One of the last groups to finish for the day, Posey also closed out with a 65. An Oklahoma State graduate, Posey has played on the Gateway Tour and in the 2006 U.S. Open. He qualified for the Texas State Open at The Honors Golf Club in Carrollton, Texas.
Christopher Ward, a junior at Texas Tech University, made a 20 ft. birdie putt on hole number 18 to close out at 65. “I played very well today and shot about as low as I possibly could,” said Ward.
Four players are tied for fourth place with 4-under par rounds of 66, including Thomas Baker, Greg Hamilton, Adam Crawford, and Dustin Garza.
Perry Arthur of Plano, Texas made a hole-in-one on hole number 2. He aced the 177 yard, par 3 using a 6 iron.
The 72-hole stroke play event consists of 156 contestants comprised of 27 amateurs and 129 professionals. The field will play 36- holes before being cut to the low 55 scores and ties. All four rounds will be contested at The Cascades, a 6,918 yard, par 70 layout located in Tyler, TX. The total estimated purse is $126,000, with $25,000 awarded to the champion.
The 2008 Texas State Open at The Cascades is presented by Ashworth, KETK NBC 56, Park Cities Bank, Residence Inn Marriott, Tyler Coca-Cola, and UST Shafts.
Round two will commence at 7:30 a.m. on Friday. Admission is $10.00 for adults, $5.00 for those 18 years of age and under, and free to Northern Texas PGA Junior Golf Foundation members.
