NORTHERN TEXAS PGA LEADS AFTER DAY ONE OF TEXAS JOE BLACK CUP MATCHES
LUFKIN, Texas – The Northern Texas PGA took a commanding eight point lead after day one of the 28th Texas Joe Black Cup Matches. The Northern Texas PGA won five points in the morning Four-Ball matches and five points in the afternoon Foursome matches for a day one total of ten points. The Southern Texas PGA team halved two Four-Ball matches and won one Foursome match to end day one with two points.
The teams from each section are represented by their Section President, Senior Points Leader, top 9 PGA directors of golf and head golf professionals, and a Captain’s Pick of a PGA director of golf or head golf professional. Ronny Glanton, head golf professional at Sherrill Park Golf Course in Richardson is captain of the Northern Texas PGA team with Steve Bowman, teaching professional at the Matt Swanson School of Golf at Wildcat in Houston serving as the Southern Texas PGA captain. The matches are being contested at Crown Colony Country Club, a 6,692 yard, par 72 layout in Lufkin.
The Texas Joe Black Cup Matches is an annual competition between the Northern Texas PGA and the Southern Texas PGA Sections. The matches are currently tied with a 13-13-1 overall record. The Ryder Cup style format features 12 golf professionals from each Section competing in Foursome and Four-Ball Matches the first day followed by Singles Matches the final day. The event was started in 1981 to honor Joe Black, a Snyder native who was completing his first year as President of The PGA of America.
One point is awarded to a winning match and halve a point awarded to any match that is tied after eighteen holes. The Northern Texas PGA needs 12 ½ points to capture the cup while the Southern Texas PGA needs 12 points to retain the cup. Singles matches will begin at 8:15 a.m. off of the first tee.
