DAY ONE RESULTS – TOP SEEDS FALL EARLY DALLAS, Texas – The first round of the Cleveland Golf / Club Car NTPGA Match Play Championship resulted in some very close matches going as far as nineteen holes with several upsets. Jan Urso, general manager at The Ridge Golf Center in Midlothian, Texas and #32 seed for the Championship, defeated the 2008 NTPGA Player of the Year #1 seed, Cameron Doan 2 & 1. Urso played extremely well to win his first match as Doan was a favorite to capture the title. Another notable upset was the defeat of the #3 seed, Lindy Miller of the Ben Hogan Foundation, by Judd Whiteman, the #30 seed, assistant golf professional at Dallas National Golf Club. Miller was another favorite to capture the title as a six-time Cleveland Golf / Club Car NTPGA Match Play Champion. The quarter-final matches will feature three of the top eight seeds. The #2 seed, and 1998 champion, Perry Arthur a teaching professional at Sherrill Park is the highest seed remaining. Bruce Smith, the #5 seed and an assistant professional from Stonebriar Country Club and Travis Johns the #8 seed and an assistant professional at Preston Trail Golf Club are the other highest seeds still competing. Jamie Elliott, the director of instruction at Bridlewood GC came into the event under the radar as the #23 seed. However, Elliott’s peers know not to underestimate the 2005 and 2006 Cleveland Golf / Club Car NTPGA Match Play champion. Elliott also lost on the 18th hole of the final match last year to Dean Larsson, an assistant professional at Bent Tree CC. Larsson is not defending his title this week due to a scheduling conflict. Elliott, who dating back to 2005 has won 16 of his last 17 matches will play Perry Arthur in the third quarter-final in the morning. The match promises to be one of the best of the week. The Cleveland Golf / Club Car NTPGA Match Play Championship is being contested November 10-12 at Four Seasons Resort and Club (TPC) in Irving, Texas, a 7,166 yard, par 70 layout. The top 32 players on the final 2008 Cleveland Golf / Club Car NTPGA Player of the Year Points Challenge were invited to compete in the season-ending major championship. Quarter-final matches will be played on Tuesday morning with the semi-final matches following in the afternoon. The final match will be played on Wednesday morning, with the eventual champion taking home $4,000.00 of the $34,400.00 purse.
