THREE WAY TIE FOR THE LEAD AFTER ROUND ONE OF THE 39TH CHESAPEAKE ENERGY TEXAS STATE OPEN
 
DALLAS, Texas – Three players are currently tied for lead following round one of the 39th Chesapeake Energy Texas State Open with opening rounds of five-under par, 65. Matt Edwards of Las Cruces, NM, Andrew Dresser of Carrollton, TX and Matt Stephens of Mont Belvieu, TX will lead the field entering round two on Friday.
 
Andrew Dresser, a current Nationwide Tour player, was a member of the Texas Tech University golf team and has competed in two previous Texas State Open Championships. “I hit a perfect tee shot off number one,” he said, followed by sinking a 30-foot birdie putt to help put him in the lead for the day.
 
Matt Edwards, who qualified at Painted Dunes Golf Club, played college golf at University of Nevada at Las Vegas and New Mexico State University and is currently competing on the Gateway Tour. Amateur Matt Stephens qualified at The Bridges and is currently playing college golf at the University of Texas at Tyler.
 
Two players are tied for fourth with 4-under-par rounds of 66, including Michael Whitehead, an amateur out of Sugar Land, and 2007 Champion Matt Loving of San Antonio. Vince Howell of Brentwood, California made a hole-in-one on hole 16, acing the 158 yard par-3 using a 9-iron.
 
The 72-hole stroke play event consists of 144 contestants comprised of 20 amateurs and 124 professionals. The field will play 36-holes before being cut to the low 50 scores and ties. All four rounds will be contested at The Cascades, a 6,918 yard, par 70 layout located in Tyler, TX. The total estimated purse is $125,000.00, with $25,000.00 awarded to the champion. 
 
 The 39th Chesapeake Energy Texas State Open is presented by Joyce Crane, Sleep Inn and Suites, TaylorMade-adidas Ashworth, and UST Mamiya.
 
Round two will commence on Friday, July 17 at 7:30 a.m.  Admission is $10.00 for adults, $5.00 for those under 18 years of age, and free to NTPGA Junior Golf Foundation members.
