GREGORY CAPTURES PRIZE POSSESSIONS EASTERN CHAMPIONSHIP, WEATHER SHORTENS CHAMPIONSHIP TO ONE ROUND
Dallas, TX– Greg Gregory, assistant professional at Hidden Creek Golf Course, captured the Prize Possessions Eastern Championship with a score of 64 (-8) through 18 holes. This is Gregory’s fourth individual major championship victory, and first Eastern Championship win. After a strong start through his first nine holes, Gregory entered the back nine at 4-under par. A bogey on 17 threatened to force a playoff with second place finisher Casey Devoll, assistant golf coach at the University of Texas at Arlington, who finished at 7-under par, 65, but a birdie on 18 helped Gregory secure the Championship.
“I am so fortunate to win this one. I have been so close for the past few years that this feels good to finally win this,” said Gregory after his round. “I wish it could have been more than 18 holes, but that’s just Mother Nature. I’m honored and thrilled to win this finally on the sixth try.”
The Championship was shortened to an 18-hole event after a major weather system blew through Dallas Athletic Club suspending play on Monday afternoon. Once the system moved through, wind damage and standing water rendered the golf course unplayable for the remainder of the day. Players that did not complete their first round resumed play at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday.
“A big thanks to Kevin Nettles and his team. We came out here and started today and it was like nothing had happened to the course,” Gregory added.
The Championship included a Senior Division comprised of participants aged 50 or older who were competing for a separate $11,900 purse and playing at a modified yardage. Ronny Glanton, PGA head professional at Sherrill Park Golf Course, claimed the Senior Division with 4-under par, 68, and took home $1,900.
This NTPGA major championship was the first of four individual stroke play events that comprise the Yamaha Golf Car Company / Lajitas Golf Resort Player of the Year Points Challenge and serves as a qualifier for the 2016 Texas Joe Black Cup team. The Prize Possessions Eastern Championship featured a field of 135 Northern Texas PGA Members and Apprentices competing at Dallas Athletic Club in Dallas.
The Open Division field competed for a share of the $30,600 purse with Gregory taking home $4,425 for first place.
The Prize Possessions Eastern Championship was presented by AT&T Byron Nelson, CaddyX, Deductive Health Solutions, E-Z-GO, Greg Norman Collection / Dunning Golf, PGA TOUR, PRG Americas and Pukka Headwear.
